Biography

Robert was a Friend (Quaker)

Robert Sumner (son of James Sumner and Mary Blanchard) was born 1716 in Fairfax Co., Virginia and died 1779 in Surry Co., North Carolina. He married Phebe Beals on Sep 29, 1746 in Fairfax Co.

Notes from Magdelena Plunkett for Robert Sumner: One tradition (as to Robert's origins) is that the family came from Wales. Welch arrived in the area to the east of Nottingham Lots (laid out 1702 by Henry Hollingsworth) about 1701 from Pembroke and Carthmarthenshire, South Wales. Sumner Hill (reputedly founded by Israel Reynolds) was the name of Rising Sun before Henry Reynolds opened a public house near the crossroads and renamed it. Some accounts refer to it as Summer Hill (the earliest found dated 1807). English were in the area earliest and came from Sussex, Cheshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, and Northamptonshire. Robert's father may have been named John; William Sumner's father was John (of Nansemond Co., Virginia). It has been suggested that Robert might have been son of James Sumner and Mary Blanchard, will probated Perquimans Co., NC 14 May 1750. If so, the line is through William Sumner of Nansemod Co., Virginia and his father, John Sumner of Nansemond Co.

Robert was born abt 1716, possible son of James and Mary (Blanchard) Sumner of VA and later Perquimans Co NC. He married widow Phebe (Beals) Canaday in 1746 in Fairfax Co VA, widow of Charles Canaday.

At the time of their marriage, Robert was not a Quaker and the marriage was considered "out of unity", so Phebe was disowned by the church. On 26 Jun 1749, Robert joined the Quaker faith. The family was received at the Fairfax MM in Loudon Co VA and Phebe was restored to the church.

In 1751, Robert moved his young family from VA to NC, where they became members of the Carver's Creek MM in Bladen Co NC in Feb 1751 and the Cane Creek MM in Orange Co NC in Jul 1751. Finally settling near Rowan Co (now in Guilford) NC, they were received into the New Garden MM in 1754.

One transcribed Quaker record says Robert died 1 Dec 1779, however, this is a mistranscription and the 9 is actually a 5., whereby "this Meeting apponts Isaac Jones overseer in the room of Robert Sumner deceas'd". Also evidenced, Robert was deceased by the time his son Thomas married Hannah Hiatt on 8 Oct 1777[1].
