Robert was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, England, on August 16, 1884. His parents were Robert Sumner, and Elizabeth Aspinall. He was the second of seven children. Robert was baptized on November 23, 1884, in Liverpool, at Saint Peter Church. It appears Robert remained with his family until his enlistment in the British Army in 1902. According to military records, he enlisted on July 14, 1902.

Robert married Miriam Gladys Stockbridge in Guildford, Surrey, England, in 1913. The couple would have two children. The youngest, Denis, was born after Robert's death.

Robert was a member of the Royal Field Artillery, 68 Battalion, Regimental Number 26005. He was a corporal who died from his wounds, suffered in action, on August 26,1914. He left a wife, pregnant with their second child, and a son. Robert was a recipient of the British War Medal, the Victory Medal, and the 1914 Star. He was buried at Vend'huile Communal Cemetery, Vendhuile, Departement de l'Aisne, Picardie, France.
