Biography

Clement was born in 1731. Rev. Clement Sumner was ordained as Pastor of the First Congregational Church, in Keene, Cheshire, NH on June 11, 1761. Rev. Sumner graduated from Yale in 1758, and before coming to Keene he married Elizabeth Gilbert, daughter of Captain Gilbert of Hebron, CT. Because of his loyalty to the crown, he and his brother Judge Thomas Sumner were forced to leave the prosperous USA and go to Canada, where they received land grants. - United Church History Book
