Biography

Joeseph Scott Sumner was born to Chester Arthur Sumner and Janie Belle Kisling on 27 Feb 1916. He was one of 10 children. He was born in Iowa but the family moved to Nebraska between 1921 and 1924 and then to Idaho between 1935-1937.

Joseph Registered for war 16 Oct 1940 and was enlisted 4 Apr 1941. He held the position of Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy. It was possibly during this time that he met Mary Elise Dunlap, who was a WWII nurse that was stationed at one time at the Marine hospital on the eastern coast as well as at one point in Seattle, WA. But, the events of this time are unknown. On Joseph Sumner, aka Clifford Colllins', origianal birth certificate in Chicago , IL it lists both he and Mary as the parents. She lists Joseph Scott Sumner as being deceased, and herself a widow. This was falsely provided information as Joseph Scott Sumner was still alive, and no marriage record for them was ever found. It is believed that Joseph never knew he had a son. Mary Dunlap put their son, Joseph, up for adoption. He became Clifford Joseph Collins.

Joseph S. Sumner later married Phyllis I Stromsmoe in 23 Jul 1949 in California. They then returned to live the remainder of their days in Idaho near his family. They had two children together.
