Hinshaw Vol 1, pt. 3 North Carolina Page 1012 Mount Pleasant MM. Quaker M.M. record dated 29 Mar 1817, reports that Jonathan Sumner, wife and daughters have gone from Grayson County, Virginia,. to the Darby Creek, Ohio MM. [The sons are not mentioned because the Mens minutes are not extant.] It would appear that they left Virginia before that date because their daughter Anna was born in Ohio in 1814. All other children were also born in Ohio.

It looks like there is a son that is not shown on the family record, according to the 1820 Census, as the next son Jonathan is born in 1821. Jonathan was aged 29 in 1850. In later records Jonathan says he was born anywhere from 1825 to 1835. The family can not be picked up in the 1790, 1800 or 1810 census records of Virginia because the records are lost. The Quaker records for men are not available either so it may not be possible to prove that another son belongs in this family.

Lee County, Iowa, Ambrosia Branch Record. FHL# 001922 Jonathan Sumner an Elder and son of Joshua and Sarah Sumner and grandson of Robert Sumner was born 3 Dec 1774 in Patrick Co., N. C. NOTE: Patrick was not a county in North Carolina, it was not at that date a county in Virginia either. It became a county at a later date. See Ani maps of county formation for Virginia. As noted from the Ambrosa Branch Record for his birth date this date also appears in the Quaker Record. Some records that have been submitted by relatives say that he was born 1780 in Massachusetts. The evidence shows that he was not born in Massachusetts but in Virginia.

Historical Department, Church Office Building. Journal History of the Church. Sanford Porter and Jonathan Sumner were in Far West, Kaw Twp. as Elders attending a meeting for organizing and dividing lands on the 13 Jul 1832, Jonathan was also at a council meeting held in Independence the 15 Sep 1832.

Jonathan sustained property damage from mob action in Caldwell County, Missouri, 29 Nov 1839, Jonathan and his family moved from Missouri to Adams County, Illinois Where he belonged to the Lima Branch which was formed 23 Oct 1840,

It is hard to tell if he went to Iowa first or Adams County Illinois. He had children married in Adams County, Illinois in 1840. He also had a daughter, Sarah Sumner Atherton living in Adams County in 1840. Jonathan and his wife stayed in the area until after the Prophet Joseph Smith was killed. There are records of his family in Adams County, Illinois up to 1846. There is a letter held by the RLDS signed by Jonathan Sumner supporting James Strang as the man to lead the Church after the Prophet Joseph Smith was killed. Jonathan and his family went to Voree Wisconsin with this group.

Sanford Porter Sr. Autobiography, Porter Family History page 78. Sanford Porter writes in his autobiography, "I was ordained an Elder, and set apart to labor as a missionary in and around the vicinity where we lived." " The elders then went ot the home of Nathan Sumner, about 6 miles from our place whom they baptised and ordained and Elder, and set him apart also to labor with me as a missionary in the adjoining towns. "We then went about sixty miles north where we converted some of our old neighbers, as were also the Sumners, who afterwards became relatives-in-law." Jonathan Sumner was not living very far from Sanford Porter Sr. in 1830. Later Sanford's son Chauncy Warriner Porter, married Jonathan Sumner's daughter Amy.

Index to Gospel Herald. FHL# US/Can 977.5 Al no. 119 Published at Voree, Racine, Wisconsin, Jan 1846 - June 6, 1850. Sumner, Jonathan, Affadavit, 1846, 11 1/2 Present at general conference, 1846, 10 1/2 Signs letter pf praise for Strang, 1846, 11, 1/2 Hosts New Years Banquet, 1847 1-14 1/2

In a very short history written by Martha Susannah Ireland Morford, a grand-daughter of Jonathan Sumner, she says that as a small child she lived on the Pickatonic (sic) River. (The river runs between Wayne and Gratiot Lafayette Wisconsin. Family members lived in both towns) She says " father had gone to California". I have not found the death of Jonathan Sumner some records have the date as 1858 but that is not correct as he was living with his son Nathan in 1860. Another history written by another grand-daughter Frances Caroline Voris, daughter of Anna Sumner Voris says that he lived to be almost one hundred years old. One date for his death in 1864 but that would not make him almost one hundred years old. That is the year that his son Josiah Sumner died so is that a correct death year for Jonathan?

NOTE: Some records show that there is supposed to be a son named Jonathan Robert Sumner in this family. He was married to a Tenny Rhoda Beamer, 1837 in Crayson County Virginia. Bk.1 page 29, FHL# 31758. They give his birth place as Vernon County, Missouri. The truth is that this Jonathan was born in Virginia. I do believe that he is perhaps a nephew or cousin to this Jonathan Sumner, but is not his son. The 1880 Census of Center Vernon, Missouri FHL# 1254839 page 562B. says his parents were both born in Virginia. He has three children living with him all born in Virginia.
