Alice Elfrida Sumner was born in 1858 at Merri Creek, Victoria (Australia). She was the daughter of Victorian pioneers, Theodotus John Sumner and Sarah Jones Peers. [1]
She married Charles Ryan in 1883 at Victoria. [2] When he received a knighthood, Alice became entitled as Lady Ryan.
She passed away in October 1923 at Coblenz, Rhein, Prussia, Germany whilst visiting her son, Rupert, who was stationed there as deputy high commissioner. Melbourne's Argus newspaper carried a brief death notice: "The many friends of Sir Charles Ryan will regret to learn that a private cable message was received in Melbourne yesterday stating that his wife had died suddenly at Coblenz, Germany. Lady Ryan, who before her marriage was Miss Alice Sumner, leaves two children, a son and a daughter, living in England. Mrs Andrew Chirnside, Mrs Albert Nash, and Mrs Traill, mother of Captain Traill, ADC to His Excellency the Governor General (Lord Forster) are her sisters." [3]
