Biography

On January 7, 1744, Benjamin Sumner was born at Edgartown, Massachusetts, the son John Sumner (1705-1787) and John's second wife, Jedidah Smith whom he married in 1738. He married at Brookfield, Massachusetts on August 29, 1771, Martha, the daughter of Matthias Clark of Spencer, Massachusetts. They lived first at Spencer and then moved to Vermont. Benjamin died at Townsend, Vermont, in July of 1829. Martha died about 1835. Their children are as follows:

Susanna, born at Spencer July 2, 1772. She married at Brookfield, Massachusetts on March 24 , 1795, Rev. Samuel Kingsbury. She died on October 29 , 1837. He died January 1 , 1845.

Rufus, born at Spencer on January 15, 1774. He married a Ewing of Pitts Ford, Vermont.

Frances, born at Spencer on August 15, 1775. She married at Brookfield on June 25, 1794, Abram Adams of Townshend. She died on June 5, 1864. Abram died on February 21, 1858.

Benjamin, born at Spencer on October 26, 1777.

Matthias, born in 1779.

Elizabeth, born around 1781. Married Thomas Barry.

Benjamin Sumner served several enlistments during the Revolutionary War under different commands while in Massachusetts service. He was born in Edgartown, Massachusetts and died in Townsend Vermont.
