Biography

Mary Sue Sumner was born 16 March 1897 in Christiansburg, Montgomery County, Virginia, USA. She was the daughter of Henry A Sumner (43) and Rebecca Ellen Duncan (29). Henry worked as a farmer; both of her parents had been born in Montgomery County; they were white. [1] She had older siblings:

1910s

On 6 May 1910, Mary S Sumner (12) lived in Christiansburg with her mother Ellen (38), brothers William S (17), David M (14), and the Albright family: James W (50), his wife Ella A (4), their son Thomas R (19). James and Ella had been married 21 years; Ella was the mother of 2 children with 1 living. Ellen was single and the mother of 3 children all living. They were white and born in Virginia. James was a farmer on the home farm, Thomas was a drug store salesman, Ellen worked as a servant (cook for a private family) and her sons were hired workers (farm laborers) for the Albright family. On 1 Jan 1914, her mother Rebecca Ellen Sumner (44y 5m 14d) died in Christiansburg from acites following apuration for gallstones. She was white, widowed, worked at home. She had been born 18 Jul 1869 in Virginia and the daughter of Aron and Ellen Sumner. The informant of her death was James Albright of Christiansburg. She was buried in Christiansburg. [7]

On 1 Jan 1917, her brother David M Sumner (21) married Florence L Tuck (21) in Montgomery County. David was the son of Mr and Mrs E R Sumner. Florence was the daughter of Ella and R W Tuck. [8]

On 17 Nov 1918, Mary Sue Sumner (22) married George Henry Dowdy (29) in Blountville, Sullivan County, Tennessee. The bondsman involved was Eubine White for a sum of $1200. They were married by F H Seattingood, M G. [9] [10] [11] [12] [13] George was widowed with two daughters:

1920s

On 2 Nov 1920, her sister-in-law Vivian Ann Sumner (28y 3m 16d) died in Radford from uterine cancer. She was white, married to W R sumner, worked as a housewife. She was born 16 Jul 1892 in Montgomery County and the daughter of Allen Graham (Montgomery County) and Georgie Pannell (Montgomery County). The informant of her death was her husband W R Sumner of Radford. W W Seaver provided funeral services. [14]

On 25 Jul 1922, her son Albert Clarence Dowdy was born. On 25 Sep 1922, her son Albert (2m) died in the family home 1120 Center Ave NW Roanoke from congenital syphilis. He was buried in Fairview Cemetery. [15]

On 20 May 1924, her son Robert Herbert Dowdy was born in Virginia.

About 1925, her brother William R Sumner married Clara May Lamb (25). Clara was born 28 Nov 1899 in Virginia and the daughter of Lewis M and Nora Vaught Lamb. [16]

1930, Mary S Dowdy (32) lived on Salem Ave SW in Roanoke City (Highland ward) with her husband George H (40), stepdaughter Eloise B (18), stepdaughter Jewell J (14), son Robert H (5), brother David M Sumner (36), and sister-in-law Florence L Sumner (35). Their owned home was valued at $3000. George's age at first marriage was 29; Mary was 20; David was 23; Florence was 22. George worked as a steam railroad boiler maker; Eloise worked as a finisher at the rayon mill; David worked as a policeman. [17]

On 2 Sep 1933, her stepdaughter Juanita Jewell Dowdy (18) married David Fletcher Parker (22) in Roanoke. David was single, American, white, born in Federal, North Carolina, and the son of Charles L and Alma Hall Parker. Juanita was single, white, born in Petersburg, Virginia, and the daughter of George H and Sue Sumner Dowdy. [18]

On 11 Dec 1933, her stepdaughter Eloise Dowdy (22) married John Curtis Oliver (30) in Roanoke. John was previously married and the son of Ella Ruth Atkinson and John Oliver. [19]

Apr 1935, she lived on Chapman in Roanoke City (Highland ward). [20]

On 14 Jun 1936, her son Carl Edward Dowdy was born in Virginia. [21]

On 18 Nov 1939, her stepdaughter Juanita Dowdy Parker (24) married Michael Edward Dogan (21) in Vinton, Roanoke County, Virginia. Edward was white and the son of Michael S and Bessie Huffman Dogan. Juanita was white and the daughter of George H and Mary S Sumner Dowdy. [22]

1940, Mary Dowdy (42) lived on Chapman in Roanoke City (Highland ward) with her husband George (55), son Herbert (15), and son Carl Edward (3), stepdaughter Eloise Oliver (28), and Eloise's husband John Oliver (38). George and Mary paid $57 in monthly rent; John and Eloise paid $17. The highest level of education completed for George was 2nd grade, Mary 3 years of high school, John 1 year of high school, and Eloise 8th grade. George worked as a boiler maker for the steam railway and John worked as a garage mechanic. George's 1939 salary was $1600 in 52 weeks and John's was $792 in 44 weeks. [20]

In 1942, her husband George Dowdy (53) worked for George Lucas at N&W Shoffies Crossing in Rake, Rake County. They lived at 1128 Chapman Ave in Roanoke City. [23]

On 17 Dec 1942, her son-in-law John Oliver (39y 3m 16d) died from chronic nephritis with cardiac decompensation at Roanoke's Lewis-Gale Hospital. He was white, married to Eloise Dowdy Oliver, resided at 20 Riverland Road SE in Roanoke, worked as an auto mechanic, born in Botetourt County, and son of John Oliver. Eloise was the informant of his death. Lotz Funeral Home Inc provided services. [24] He was buried December 19th in the Dowdy family plot in Fair View Cemetery, Roanoke. [25]

On 19 Jun 1943, her son Robert H Dowdy enlisted in the Army during World War II as Private in Roanoke. He had worked in the clerks and kindred occupation. [26]

On 28 Jul 1943, her husband George Henry Dowdy (54y 2m 24d) died in Roanoke from coronary occlusion due to coronary sclerosis of several ulcer eruption. He had lived at 1128 Chapman Ave SW in Roanoke and had lived in the community 50 years. He was white, married to Mrs Mary Sue Dowdy, worked as a boilermaker for N&W Ry Co. He was born 4 May 1889 in Roanoke County and the son of John and Emma Payne Dowdy. The informant of his death was his daughter Eloise Oliver of Roanoke. 1945-1946, Mary S Dowdy (widow of George H) lived at 1128 Chapman Ave SW in Roanoke. [30] [31]

On 23 Apr 1949, her son Robert Herbert Dowdy (24) married Dorothy Jacqueline Lee Powers (25) in Roanoke. Herbert was white, single, worked as a truck driver, born in Roanoke, son of George H and Mary S Sumner Dowdy, and resided in Bedford, Bedford County, Virginia. Dorothy was white, single, worked as a quiller at the rayon mill, born in Bedford County, daughter of Allen H and Ellie V Smith Powers, and resided in Bedford. They were married by George S Coffey, minister of the Methodist church. [32]

1955, Mary S Dowdy (widow of George H) lived at 1304 Dale Ave SE in Roanoke. [33]

1958, Mary S Dowdy (widow of George H) lived at 1008 Dale Ave SE Apt 3 in Roanoke. [34]

1960s

On 17 Jun 1967, her son Carl Edward Dowdy (31) married Lois Eloise Francisco (40) in Leaksville, Rockingham County, North Carolina. [35] Ed was born 14 June 1936 in Virginia and the son of George H and Mary Summer Dowdy. Lois was born 25 Mar 1927 in Virginia and the daughter of Byrd and Nora Spessard Francisco.

On 16 Oct 1967, her sister-in-law Clara Lamb Sumner (67) died at Giles Memorial in Pearisburg from circulatory collapse due to bilateral bronchopneumonia and atelectasis and fractured pelvis. Other significant conditions at the time of her death was psoriasis. She was white, resided at 604 Hopkins Street in Narrows, worked as a housewife, and married to William Robert Sumner. She was born 28 Nov 1899 in Giles County and the daughter of Lewis M and Nora Vaught Lamb. The informant of her death was her husband Mr William R Sumner. On 6 Dec 1968, her brother William Robert Sumner (77) died at Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg, Giles County, Virginia. from cerebral hemorrhage. He was white, resided at 604 Hopkins Street in Narrows, widowed from his marriage to Clara Lamb Sumner, and a retired carpenter. He was born 27 Jul 1891 in Floyd County, Virginia and the son of A A and Eleander R Sumner. The informant of his death was his daughter Mrs Nora Cossey. 1970s

On 12 Aug 1974, her daughter Juanita Dogan (58) died in Lewis-Gale Hospital in Salem from uremia due to acute renal failure. [39]

On 4 Dec 1977, her sister-in-law Florence Sumner died in Blacksburg.

On 9 May 1978, her son Robert Herbert Dowdy Sr (53) died in Bedford County Memorial Hospital from cerebral hemorrhage due to hypertension. He had lived at 811 Greenwood St in Bedford. He had worked as a tube striper in a textile mill. The informant of his death was his wife Dorothy. He was buried at Virginia Memorial Park in Forest, Bedford County. [40]

On 2 August 1978, Mary Sue Dowdy (82) died at McVitty House outside Salem, Roanoke County, Virginia from abdominal mass etiologic undetermined due to generalized arteriosclerosis. Other significant conditions contributing to her death were stoats dematitis, tabes dorsalis, and diabetes mellitus. She was Caucasian, resided at US Rt 460 West outside Salem, widowed from her marriage to George Henry Dowdy, and a housewife. She was born 16 Mar 1896 in Virginia and the daughter of Mr Sumner. The informant of her death was her son Carl E Dowdy. Lotz Funeral Home provided services and she was buried at Fair View Cemetery in Roanoke. [41] [42]

  39. The World-News Roanoke, Virginia Thursday, August 8, 1974 Mrs. Juanita Dowdy Dogan Mrs. Juanita Dowdy Dogan, age 58, of 3108 Meadowood Rd, SE, passwed away Wednesday in a Salem hospital. Mrs. Dogan was the widow of Michael Edward Dogan and was an employee of the Fred Whitaker Co. in the winding department. Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Mary Sue Dowdy, of Roanoke two sons Gary E. Dogan, of Roanoke and Michael B. Dogan, of Dublin Va; two brothers C. Eddie Dowdy of Roanoke and Herbert Dowdy of Bedford; a sister, Mrs. Eloise Oliver of Roanoke; also one grandson. Funeral services will be conducted at Lotz Roanoke Chapel, 11:00 AM, Friday August 9, 1974, with the Rev. R. Bruce Griffith officiating. Interment in Fairview Cemetery. Friends may call at Lotz Roanoke Chapel, 1001 Franklin Rd, S.W.
