Biography

William Robert Sumner was born 27 July 1891 in Christiansburg, Montgomery County, Virginia, USA. He was the son of Henry A Sumner and Rebecca Ellen Duncan.

On 30 Jul 1895, his brother David Moses Sumner was born in Montgomery County.

On 16 Mar 1896, his sister Mary Sue Sumner was born in Christiansburg. Mary was the third child born. Henry (43) was white, born in Montgomery County, worked as a farmer. Rebecca (29) was white, born in Montgomery County. Henry and Rebecca married 18 Jun 1891. [1]

1910s

On 6 May 1910, William S Sumner (17) lived in Christiansburg with his mother Ellen (38), brother David M (14), sister Mary S (12), employer James W Albright (50), Mr Albright's wife Ella A (40), and Mr Albright's son Thomas R (19). They were white and born in Virginia. James and Ella had been married 21 years; Ella was the mother of 2 children with 1 living. Ellen was single and the mother of 3 children all living. James was a farmer on the home farm, Thomas was a drug store salesman, Ellen worked as a servant (cook for a private family) and her sons were hired workers (farm laborers) for the Albright family. On 16 Sep 1913, his son Edward Fuqua Sumner was born in Radford, Montgomery County, Virginia. [7] [8]

On 1 Jan 1914, his mother Rebecca Ellen Sumner (44y 5m 14d) died in Christiansburg from acites following apuration for gallstones. She was white, widowed, worked at home. She had been born 18 Jul 1869 in Virginia and the daughter of Aron and Ellen Sumner. The informant of her death was James Albright of Christiansburg. She was buried in Christiansburg. [9]

On 1 Jan 1917, his brother David M Sumner (21) married Florence L Tuck (21) in Montgomery County. David was the son of Mr and Mrs E R Sumner. Florence was the daughter of Ella and R W Tuck. [10]

1917, his daughter Evelyn Ann Sumner was born in Radford. [7] [11]

On 4 Jun 1917, William Robert Sumner lived in Radford. He was born 27 Jul 1891 in Christiansburg, a natural-born US citizen. He worked as a boiler fireman for A S Tackitt at Welmar Ave Pound. He was supporting his wife and two children. He had prior military service as rank Private for Infantry branch for 2.5 months in Virginia. He was white, tall, slender, with brown eyes and black hair. 1920s

On 2 Jan 1920, William Sumner (28) lived on First Street in Radford City with his wife Vivian (27), son Edward (6), daughter Evelyn (3), the Harris family, the Herd family, and the Brooks family. William worked in sump repair. [7]

On 2 Nov 1920, his wife Vivian Ann Sumner (28y 3m 16d) died in Radford from uterine cancer. She was white, married to W R sumner, worked as a housewife. She was born 16 Jul 1892 in Montgomery County and the daughter of Allen Graham (Montgomery County) and Georgie Pannell (Montgomery County). The informant of her death was her husband W R Sumner of Radford. W W Seaver provided funeral services. [18]

About 1925, William R Sumner married Clara May Lamb (25). Clara was born 28 Nov 1899 in Virginia and the daughter of Lewis M and Nora Vaught Lamb. [19]

About Oct 1927, his daughter Nora M Sumner was born in West Virginia. [20] [21]

1930s

On 18 Apr 1930, William R Sumner (38) lived at 808 Washington Avenue in Princeton City, East River Magisterial District, Mercer County, West Virginia with his wife Clara May (30) and daughter Nora M (2y 6m). Their monthly rent was $20. William's age at first marriage was 19; Clara May was 25. William worked as a carpenter for the railroad. [20]

On 26 Jun 1937, his son Edward Fuqua Sumner (23) married Elsie Marie Stump (21) in Radford. Edward was white, single, worked as a carpenter and painter, born in Radford, son of W R and Vivian Graham Sumner, and resided in Radford. Elsie was white, single, born in Radford, daughter of Frank E and Mildred Anderson Stump, and resided in East Radford. They were married by G A Daniel, minister of the Presbyterian US church. [8]

On 8 Dec 1939, his daughter Evelyn Ann Sumner (22) married William Fay Morrell (23) in Wise County, Virginia. William was white, single, worked as a textile worker, born in Bristol, Sullivan County, Tennessee, son of George and Mary White Morrell, and resided in Radford. Evelyn was white, single, born in Radford, daughter of William and Vivian Graham Sumner, and resided in Radford. They were married by B T Sells, minister of the Methodist church. [11]

1940s

On 13 Apr 1940, William R Sumner (48) lived in Mercer Street in Princeton with his wife Clara (45) and daughter Nora May (12). Their monthly rent was $20. William's highest level of education completed was 8th grade; Clara finished 10th grade. William worked as a carpenter foreman for the steam railroad construction; the week before the census he worked 48 hours; his 1939 salary was $1900 in 52 weeks. [22] His son Edward Sumner (26) lived with his wife Elsie S (22) and her family in Radford (East Ward). [23] His daughter Evelyn Morrell (23) lived with her husband William (24) in Radford (East Ward). [24]

1942, William Robert Sumner lived in Mullens, Wyoming County, West Virginia. [25]

On 28 Jul 1943, his brother-in-law George Henry Dowdy (54y 2m 24d) died in Roanoke from coronary occlusion due to coronary sclerosis of several ycoer wurption (?). He had lived at 1128 Chapman Ave SW in Roanoke and had lived in the community 50 years. He was white, married to Mrs Mary Sue Dowdy, worked as a boilermaker for N&W Ry Co. He was born 4 May 1889 in Roanoke County and the son of John and Emma Payne Dowdy. The informant of his death was his daughter Eloise Oliver of Roanoke. John M Oakey Inc provided funeral services and he was buried at Fair View Cemetery in Roanoke on July 31st. [26] [27] [28]

1950s

On 25 May 1956, his daughter Nora May Summers (28) married Howard Allen Cossey (31) in Virginia. Howard was white, divorced from his first marriage, born in Shawnee, Oklahoma, son of Angus and Madge Leech Cossey, and resided in Narrows, Giles County, Virginia. Nora was white, divorced from her first marriage, worked for the hospital, born in Mercer County, West Virginia, the daughter of William R and Clara Lamb Sumner, and resided in Narrows. [21] [29]

1960s

On 26 Apr 1961, his daughter Evelyn Ann Morrell (44) died at Bristol Memorial hospital in Bristol from intraventricular cerebral hemorrhage. She was white, married to William Fay Morrell, resided at 1502 Broad Street in Bristol, a housewife. She was born 10 Mar 1917 in Virginia and the daughter of William R and Vivian Graham Sumner. The informant of her death was her husband William Fay Morrell of Bristol. Abard Funeral Home provided services and she was buried at Glenwood in Bristol. [30]

On 16 Oct 1967, his wife Clara Lamb Sumner (67) died at Giles Memorial in Pearisburg from circulatory collapse due to bilateral bronchopneumonia and atelectasis and fractured pelvis. Other significant conditions at the time of her death was psoriasis. She was white, resided at 604 Hopkins Street in Narrows, worked as a housewife, and married to William Robert Sumner. She was born 28 Nov 1899 in Giles County and the daughter of Lewis M and Nora Vaught Lamb. The informant of her death was her husband Mr William R Sumner. Riffe's Funeral Home Inc provided services and she was buried at Monte Vista Cemetery in Bluefield, West Virginia. [31]

On 6 Dec 1968, William Robert Sumner (77) died at Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg from cerebral hemorrhage. He was white, resided at 604 Hopkins Street in Narrows, widowed from his marriage to Clara Lamb Sumner, and a retired carpenter. He was born 27 Jul 1891 in Floyd County, Virginia and the son of A A and Eleander R Sumner. The informant of his death was his daughter Mrs Nora Cossey. Riffe's Funeral Home Inc provided services and he was buried at Monte Vista Cemetery. [32] [33]
