Biography

Charles, son of John S Sumner & M Abby Robinson, was born on 6 February 1872 in Newton, Massachusetts, United States.[1]

Married Adele Hulse.

Charles married Margaretha Catharina Adele Hulsz on 24 August 1898 in Hamburg, Hamburg, Deutschland (Germany).[2]

Charles applied for passports for himself, his wife Adele, and their two daughters on 15 Jan 1903 at the American consulate in Hamburg, Germany. They were issued on 16 Jan 1903.[3] He had left the US on 6 Jan 1903 and was residing in Germany as a merchant for his employer, the Keystone Watch Case company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Charles applied for passports for himself, his wife, and their three daughters in Berlin, Germany, on 10 Feb 1905. They were issued on 11 Feb 1905.[4] His wife was Adele. Their daughters were Eleanor, b Hamburg 30 May 1899; Hildegard, b Wandsbek (Hamburg) Germany 19 Jan 1904; and Mildred, b Hamburg, Germany, 25 Mar 1903. He was a merchant, and he had left the US on 6 Jan 1903 and had been staying in Hamburg and wanted to continue residing there until being recalled home by his business. His previous passport had been issued in Berlin in 1903. According to the physical description, Charles had an oval face with a florid complexion, full facial hair and male pattern baldness. His eyes were hazel. He had a high forehead and a prominent nose.

Charles, Adele, and their daughters registered as American citizens residing in Germany on 19 June 1912.[5] Charles was representing the Keystone Watch Case Company. His wife, Adele (Hulsz), had been born in Manila, Phiilipine Islands.

There are more such passport applications.[6] [7]

In the 1920 census Charles (age 47), Manager, and Adele were boarders of Thos S Ritterson in Philadelphia Ward 46, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[8]

In the 1930 census Charles and Adele had returned to the US. Charles was based in Chicago and employed as a "Commercial Traveler"[9]

Charles died on 6 May 1949 and was buried in Chesterton, Porter County, Indiana, United States.[10]

According to a short obituary,[11], Charles was survived by his wife Adele and four daughters. His daughters were: Mrs Frank R Doll, formerly of Whiting; Dr Anne Popper of Tallahassee, Florida; Mrs Harris B McIntyre of Marblehead, Massachusetts; and Mrs Walter Krasemann, also of Tallahassee.

"Dr Anne Popper" appears to be Dr Anna Marie Therese Popper, born Hamburg Germany to Margaretha Catharina Adele Hulsz and her first husband, Isidor "Charles" Popper. [12] [13] Anna emigrated to the US in 1924[14] and became a naturalized citizen in 1931.[15] She had a PhD in history and taught at Florida State University at Tallahassee for many years. Her arrival record in 1924 says she intends to stay with her father, Charles Popper, in Chicago, though she had previously visited the US and spent time in Newton, Massachusetts.
