Biography

Henry Lightbourn Sumner was born 20 October 1880 in Green Turtle Cay, Abaco, Bahamas to Elijah Sumner, Wesleyan clergyman, and Sarah Lightbourn Sumner.

Sometime in the late 1890s, after 15-plus years in the Bahamas, the Sumners returned to England to serve there. Elijah, Sarah, and Henry appeared in the 1901 England Census as residents in Cornwall.

H L Lightbourn worked in the Civil Service in the Federated Malay States - in 1907 he was appointed Inspector of Schools in Negri Sembilan; in 1920 he was serving as Inspector of Schools in Taiping, Perak. He became a Freemason in the Perak Jubilee Lodge, and was a member of the Straits Branch of the Asiatic Society.

Henry left Malaysia in 1921/22. He returned to England and married Dorothy Louisa Pearson, adopted daughter of John and Mary Jones, in Nantwich, Cheshire, in late 1923. They moved to the Bahama Islands and their son David Roger Pearson Sumner was born there in December 1925.

Mr Sumner became Superintendent of the Bahamas General Hospital in 1927 and managed the Hospital for many years.

Henry Lightbourn Sumner died sometime after 1959.
