Frederick Sumner is Notable.

Frederick was a merchant and political figure in New Brunswick. He was the first Mayor of the City of Moncton upon its founding and served six terms in that role. He also represented Westmorland County in the provincial legislature.

Youth, Education and Business Career

Frederick was born on April 12, 1855[1] in Moncton New Brunswick, a son of William Hunt Tyler Sumner, an American-born merchant and Elizabeth (Thompson) Sumner.[2] He was educated in Moncton and Truro, Nova Scotia.[3] In 1871, his father was working in Truro as a Railway contractor during a time of significant expansion of railways in Canada.

Frederick became a hardware merchant by trade and was also involved in the production and export of timber.[3]

Politics

Sumner served six terms as Mayor of Moncton. In his first term, from 1890-1891 he oversaw Moncton's incorporation as a city. He then served again from 1892-1894 and in 1900.[4]

He represented Westmorland County in the New Brunswick Legislative Assembly from 1895 to 1899 under Premier Andrew Blair.[3]

He ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the Canadian House of Commons in 1908.[3]

At the time of his death in 1919, he was Agent-General of New Brunswick in London and had been since at least 1917.[5][6]

Marriages and Children

Mr. Sumner was married twice.

He married (1) Margaret (Maggie) T. McEwen of Moncton on April 10, 1879. She was a daughter of Thomas McEwen, a ships carpenter based in Hopewell, and Rebecca (Nixon) McEwen.[7][5]

He married (2) Hazel Irene Mulholld of Toronto on June 12, 1917 in Toronto, Ontario. She was a daughter of Henry and Christine (Shore) Mulholland.[6]

Death and Burial

Frederick passed away Nov 20, 1919 in Moncton and is interred there at the Elmwood Cemetery.[5]

Former Homes

Two former homes of Frederick W. Sumner are recognized as historic places.

  • 86 Weldon Street in Moncton, built on Main Street in the 1870s and moved to its present location in 1908.[10]
  • 114 Alma Street in Moncton, built in 1876.[11]

Frederick's father was born in Lubec, Maine. His mother outlived him and was 93 at the time of his death.
