Biography

Captain Frederick Sumner served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in World War I
Service started: 28 Aug 1916
Unit(s): 145th Battalion CEF
Service ended:

Frederick Royal, also known as Roy, was born Dec 9, 1881 in Moncton, New Brunswick. He was a son of Frederick Frederick W. Sumner and Margaret (McEwen) Sumner. His father was a noted industrialist and politician from the Moncton area, who ran Sumner Co. Ltd.[1]

He married Jennie Norfolk Dernier, a daughter of Henry and Eliza Dernier, on August 26, 1909 in Westmorland County.[2] His occupation at the time was listed simply as "Merchant".

Roy spent time in the military, serving in the 74th New Brunswick Rangers before enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces at Valcartier on August 28, 1916. At the time he held the rank of Major. Roy served in the 145th Overseas Battalion, CEF.[3] His battalion went overseas aboard the S.S. Tuscania on September 25, 1916, at which time he held the rank of Captain.[4]

He returned to Moncton after the war, where he entered business with his father and took over the leadership of Sumner Company, Ltd after his father's death In 1919. He was President of that company until his own passing. Sumner Company was one of the largest enterprises in Moncton at the time, being involved all kinds of importing, exporting and manufacturing. An usually detailed description of his occupation on his death registration lists him as "President of Sumner Co. Ltd, Hardware, China, Silverware and Auto Truck Service."[1]

Roy passed away on March 24, 1946 in Moncton at the age of 64 and was interred in Saint John according to his death certificate (See Note).[1]

"Two of Sumner's former homes in Moncton are noted as places of historical significance:

Known Children

  • Margaret Willloughby (Sumner) Fraser 1912-? m. Martin Paré Fraser 1939
  • Ruth Sumner 1914-?

Census Records

Research Notes

  1. A military document (Officer's Declaration Paper) states he date of birth as October 9, 1891 however this must be a typo for several reasons: It disagrees with census records which place Roy's birth in 1881, It would have have made him too young to have served 18 years in the rangers, and too young to hold the rank of Major. This information was therefore ignored in favour of the 1881 birth alluded to in other records.
  2. Although his death certificate says he was interred at Saint John, no grave record has been found on Find-A-Grave or other sources. The rest of the Sumner family was largely interred at the Elmwood Cemetery in Moncton, and Roy's wife Jennie was interred at Elmwood in 1964. It is therefore very possible that the death certificate is incorrect and that he was interred at Elmwood Cemetery in Moncton.
