DOROTHY WILLIAMS,[1] b. at Pomfret, 30 Oct 1734 daughter of William and Sarah (Stevens) Williams; d. at Pomfret, 29 Aug 1800; m. at Pomfret, 11 Apr 1754, SAMUEL SUMNER, b. 22 Aug 1726 son of Samuel Samuel Sumner and Elizabeth (Griffin) Elizabeth Griffin Sumner; Samuel d. at Pomfret, 23 Jul 1805.
Deacon and Ensign Samuel Sumner was a leading citizen of Pomfret/Abington and innkeeper of the Sumner tavern house. The tavern was the family dwelling house but also a meeting place for revolutionaries during the war. Samuel served on the library committee in Abington when the library was established in 1793. In 1802, he presented a bell for use the church at Abington.[2]
In his will written 15 April 1805 (proved 2 September 1805), Samuel Sumner directs that his debts be paid by son Samuel Sumner, Jr. A right of land he holds in the state of New Hampshire and all the household goods (except the clock, the bible, wearing apparel, arms, yearling colt, and mare saddle) are to be divided equally among his three daughters: Dorothy Ingals, Lucy Sessions, and Elizabeth Hartshorn. Son Samuel receives the clock and the right in the Pomfret library. The arms go to grandson Eliakim Williams Sessions and the colt to grandson George Sumner Hartshorn. The right in the Abington library goes to grandson Warren Ingalls. The remainder of the estate goes to son Samuel. Personal estate was valued at $293.71. [3]

ix MARY “POLLY” SUMNER, b. 12 Jun 1771; d. at Southborough, MA, 8 Aug 1803; m. at Pomfret, 9 Nov 1796, BENJAMIN CHAMPNEY, b. at Southborough, 29 Aug 1772 son of Jonathan and Damaris (Howe) Champney; Benjamin d. at Southborough, 18 Nov 1832. Benjamin married second Betsey Dench. Mary had four children all of whom died in infancy.
x GEORGE SUMNER, b. 2 Dec 1773; d. at Hanover, NH while a student at Dartmouth College, 14 Dec 1788.[6]
