Thomas Sumner was born in about 1786 in Eccleston, Lancashire.

Thomas married Mary Ellison on 4 Apr 1825 at Farnworth Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. Both were of the local parish; Thomas was a farmer, Mary a spinster. The witnesses were Margaret Jackson and William Ellison.

Their son Thomas was born in about 1826 in Eccleston, Lancashire.

Their daughter Mary Ann was born in about 1828 in Eccleston, Lancashire.

Their daughter Elizabeth was born in about 1831 in Lancashire.

By June 6th 1841, the family was living in Catchey Moss, Eccleston; Thomas was a farmer. One agricultural labourer, Thomas Owen, was living with them.

By March 30th 1851, they were still in Eccleston, and Thomas was still a farmer.
