Thomas was a Friend (Quaker)

The sixth of ten children born to Robert Sr and Phebe (Beals) Sumner of Rowan County, North Carolina, and later Surry County, North Carolina.

Thomas married:

1) Hannah Hiatt on 8 Oct 1777 at Tom's Creek Friends MH in Rowan Co (now Surry) NC; she died bef 1829 in PH. 2) Widow Martha (Rich) Williams on 1 Jul 1829 at Fairfield Friends MH in Leesburgh, Highland Co OH.

Children with Hannah: 1) Joseph Sumner (1778-1847) 2) Phebe Sumner (1781-1858), m: Moses Hurst Gregg Jr. 3) William Sumner (b: 1784) 4) Absalom Sumner (1786-1865), m: Priscilla Jackson. 5) Bowater Sumner (1789-1851), m: Lettice Walter. 6) Ann Sumner (b: 1791) 7) Hannah Sumner (b: 1793), m: John W Walter. 8) Lydia Sumner (1795-1876), m: Curtis Jackson. 9) Rebecca Sumner (b: 1798), m: Mr Davis. 10) Abigail Sumner (1804-1894)

No known children with Martha, who is said to have moved to Cincinnati after Thomas' death.

In 1809, Thomas moved his family to OH where they were received at the Fairfield Friends MH in Highland Co OH. He was a Quaker elder in both NC and OH. His Will was probated on 11 Jun 1838 in Highland Co OH.

The 1830 U.S. census at Paint Township, Highland, Ohio, lists Thomas Sumner and his Brother Bowater Sumner as farmers.
