Increase was born on 23 February 1642[1]. He was the son of William Sumner and Mary West.
He married Sarah Staples in 1667 - they had 11 children.
He was Freeman of Dorchester in 1678, and then selectman in 1693, and Constable in 1694. He went with Rev. Joseph Lord and a few others to form the settlement of Dorchester, South Carolina. He was made a deacon of the Church of Christ that he and Peter O'Kelly founded in Dorchester, South Carolina.
