Biography

Grant was the youngest of six siblings. He started farming with his father on the family farm then after marriage to Betty Richter on December 1, 1952 at the home of his sister, Maureen in Indiana, he continued his passion in farming at the farm in Green, Kansas that his parents had purchased in 1914. [1]

Grant was known for his sense of humor and could always make those around him laugh. In a tribute to his love of humor and his Dr. Pepper, his great grandchildren placed a Dr. Pepper in his casket so that he would always have his favorite beverage. [2]

Obituary of A. Sump

A. Grant Sump, age 91 of Clay Center, Kansas died Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at the Leonardville Nursing Home in Leonardville, Kansas.

He was born on January 4, 1922 on the family farm outside of Green, Kansas, the son of Albert and Maude (Gilchrist) Sump.

On December 1, 1952 in Darlington, Indiana, he was married to Betty Jean Richter. She survives of the home. Grant was a farmer and cattleman who epitomized the meaning of hard work. He served on the Green school board when it united with the Clay Center school district. He also served on the Goshen Township Board, Goshen Central Cemetery Board and the Greenleaf COOP Board. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved his dog Herman.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Scott Sump and wife Pam of Green, Kansas; three grandchildren, Wendi Alexander and husband Royston, Casey Patterson and husband Derek and Matt Sump and five great-grandchildren, Gavin and Aubrey Alexander and Keton, Slade and Dakin Patterson.

He was preceded in death by one son, Bruce Sump; one daughter, Mona Sump; two brothers, Norman and Cecil Sump and three sisters, Virginia Carlson, Georgia Carlson and Maureen Parker.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Clay Center with Rev. Paul Tessaro officiating. Music was furnished by Marian McKain. Pallbearers were Arlan Sump, Harley Carlson, Brian Lippert, Rick Lippert, Ronnie Richter and Mark Richter. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery in Clay Center, Kansas.

A memorial has been established for Meadowlark Hospice.[3]
