Biography

Flag of Cumberland (adopted 2012)
William Sumpton was born in Cumberland, England.

William was baptised on 8 November 1778 in Ennerdale, Cumberland, England, the son of Lancelot Sumpton and Jane.[1],[2].

No other baptisms are anywhere close, even though this is 6 years earlier than the 1841 census would suggest and 2 years earlier than his marriage documents suggest.
The middle name 'Kenshot' is not supported by any sources; there are online sources for a William Kenshot Sumpton living in London but not elsewhere.)

He presumably moved to Low Waterside, Kinniside, when his father bought the tenantwright in December 1804.

William married Mary Ashburner on 26 March 1808 at St James' Church, Whitehaven[3], [4]

His marriage allegation [5] gives his age as 27, hers as 23, and says they have both been resident at Low Water Side in the parish of St Bees for four weeks; he signed his name. The marriage bond document [6] additionally says that he was a husbandman and she a spinster, and confirms the church in which the marriage was to take place; the other signatory was Percival Simpson of Mudley (or Meedly), St Bees. Both documents are dated 26th March 1808.

In 1829, William, a yeoman, was living at Waterside, Kinniside. [7].

In the 1841 census, William was in Water Side, Low, St Bees, Cumberland, England.[8]

William's death was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1843 in the Whitehaven district.[9]

He is buried in Ennerdale, with his parents and (later) his wife. Their tombstone bears the following inscription:

ERECTED In MEMORY of Jane the Wife of Lancelot Sumpton of Low Waterfide Kinnifide who departed this Life on the 8th day of Sep 1803. Aged 57 years. Also Joseph their Son died on the 14th day of the same Month in the 21 Year of his Age ALSO OF The above LANCELOT SUMPTON who departed this Life on the ?9th day of November 1819 aged ?68 Years. He was 41 Years ?Cloaking this ?Ground. Also William their Son who died 10th October 184?3 aged ? 64 Years. Also Mary his Wife [illegible]

The farm was still in Sumpton hands in 1901, when Bulmer's Directory of Cumberland includes an entry for "John Sumpton (yeoman) Low Water Side Kinniside" [10].

Research Notes

A heavily-sourced tree on Ancestry has a different mother for him, Jane Wood [6]. A maiden name of Kenshot for the mother of either candidate would be decisive.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:
