Biography

Hannah Sumpton was born in Egremont, Cumberland [1] on 2nd October [2] 1855, the daughter of John Sumpton and Mary Sumpton nee Williamson[3]. (For why this is the right parentage for her, see Research Notes: Parentage.)

1861 census: Living on Main Street, Egremont, Whitehaven, Cumberland [4]. (Notes: 1. Joseph is actually Joseph Birkett, shortly to marry Mary; 2. Jonathan Dawson, Hannah's own future husband, was living on the same street [5])

The 1851 census record for what is clearly the same family identifies her father (though before she was born; and he was deceased by the time of the 1861 census) as John Sumpton, from Kinniside (a small town in the parish of St Bees). This record also indicated her mother's birthplace as Ennerdale, Cumberland [6].

1871 census: In live-in domestic service in Main Court, the Black Bull, Egremont, Cumberland [7]. (Note: Elizabeth's relationship to her is not yet clear; they are not siblings.)

Research Notes

Parentage: Although births of other Hannah Sumptons were registered in Whitehaven (the Registration District containing Egremont) in nearby years, the only one close enough in time to permit confusion [17] is the daughter of John James Sumpton and Elizabeth Ann Jackson [18], so is incompatible with the census records from Hannah's childhood.
