James was the son of Daniel Sumsion and Lucy Nowell. He was baptised at Monkton-Farleigh, Wiltshire, England on 14 March 1802.
The 1841 census lists him at Monkton-Farleigh, Wiltshire. In the household were Henry Sumsion, 14 (probably his son) and John Mizen, 19, both born in Wiltshire.[1]
He was buried at Monkton-Farleigh on 27 May 1844.[2]
