John was born about 1859 in Centre County Pennsylvania, the fourth son and ninth child of Andrew and Mary (Fultz) Sunday.[1]
Although John seems to have avoided the 1880 census, he was granted a Cash Sale Patent for 79 ½ acres in Rooks County, Kansas in October of 1890.[2]
A single sentence in the Junction City Union informs us that he married Miss Lena Bronson on 11 August 1900 in Junction City, Kansas.[3][4] And, indeed, the 1900 census shows he was boarding at the home of Teressa Willoughby in Junction City, where he was working as a carpenter.[5]
John and Lena continued to live in Junction City, in a rented house, for the next five years,[6] but something was amiss. In 1910, Lena was living in Denver, Colorado[7] where she had been granted a divorce.[8] John, on the other hand, was still in Junction City, though not for long.[9] The 1915 state census shows he was renting a place in Plainville, Kansas, doing carpentry work.[10]
Eventually, he decided to try his luck at carpentry in Nebraska, and was enumerated with his brother's family in Hastings in 1920.[11]
A year later he had died, and rests in an apparently unmarked grave in Greenwood Cemetery, Hansen, Nebraska.[12]
