Biography

Mary "Polly" Sunderland was born to David Sunderland in 1759.[1][2][3][4] She was baptized on 26 August 1759 at Christ Church in Sowerby Bridge, Yorkshire, England.[1] Mary and her family immigrated to Pennsylvania, USA, by 1783. She married John Carlisle of Wayne Township, Cumberland (now Mifflin) County, Pennsylvania, sometime between 1774 and 1779. Mary's father named her in his 1808 will: "Item I do leave to my eldest daughter Mary Carlisle the sum of sixty dollars to be paid at four payments viz fifteen dollars to be paid to her fifteen months after my decease and fifteen dollars at the end of twelve months and every twelve months until all is paid."[4] Mary was alive at the time of husband John's death in 1811 and is listed in his estate sale record as purchasing a bay mare on 4 April 1812 in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:

Sunderland-706 and Sunderland-660 appear to represent the same person because: Hello, I am proposing a merge of Sunderland-706 - Mary Sunderland, daughter of David Sunderland (England > Penn.) and Hannah Swaine, baptized 26 August 1759 in Sowerby Bridge, Yorkshire, England (per baptism records).

In David's will he names "dau - Mary Carlisle, eldest dau." Based on tax records (for husband) and children's dates of birth, Mary married John Carlisle between 1774 and 1779 -- probably in what was then Cumberland County (later Mifflin).

You have David's daughter, Mary, dying in England in 1820, but I don't see a source. My family has DNA matches to descendants of Mary's siblings. David Sunderland is my 5th great-grandfather on my maternal side.

I look forward to hearing from you. Katie (Mitchell) Clifton Mitchell-26097
