Biography

Mathilda Seraphia Sundström was born in Botsmark, in the parish of Sävar in Västerbotten on 26 Nov 1868, and was baptized there on 3 Dec 1868. She was the daughter of Carl Anton Sundström and Maria Johanna Nilsdotter.^[1]

Mathilda married John Gustafson Anderson by 1895, probably in Salem, McCook County, South Dakota.^[2] They had one child, a son, Hjalmar, born on 25 Nov 1895, in Salem. In June of 1901, Mathilda's sister, Carolina, died, leaving eight children. At Carolina's request, Mathilda and John adopted her infant daughter, Esther, born on 27 Jan 1901.

John Gustafson Anderson died in Upland, San Bernardino County, California, on 3 Jun 1936.^[3]

Mathilda Seraphia (Sundstrom) Anderson died of a heart attack at her home in Upland on 3 Feb 1943.^[4] She was interred with her late husband at Bellevue Memorial Park in Ontario, San Bernardino County, California.^[5]

"UPLAND, Feb. 4. -- Mrs. Mathilda S. Anderson, widow of John G. Anderson, succumbed to a heart attack last evening at her home, 265 North Euclid avenue. She was 74 years of age.

"A native of Sweden, Mrs. Anderson came to Upland from Salem, S. D., 25 years ago. She was a member of the Upland Methodist Church and the Upland Woman's club.

"Surviving Mrs. Anderson are a daughter, Miss Esther Anderson, Chaffey high school faculty member; two sons, Hjalmar Anderson, well-known Upland businessman, and George Anderson, Cavour, S. D.; a sister, Mrs. H. M. Nelson, Salem, S. D., two sisters and a brother in Sweden, and three grandchildren.

"Mrs. Hjalmar Anderson, a daughter-in-law, is now in Imperial valley, where she was called by the death of a sister.

"Funeral arrangements, in charge of the Stone mortuary, are incomplete."
