He passed away on Aug 7, 1896 in Washington County, Virgina from typhoid fever. He was 45 years and 8 months old. He is buried in Old Glade Spring Baptist Church Cemetery in Glade Spring, Washington County, Virginia. His grave is marked with a handmade stone.
