George was born about 1840 in Hendricks County, Indiana. He was the youngest known child of Samuel Surber and Susannah Roy.
Little is known about George W. Surber. He appears with his family in the census for both 1850 and 1860 with his name erroneously listed as Davenport in 1850. He mustered into the Union Army with his brother, John, on September 7, 1861 where he served in Company H of the 7th Regiment of the Indiana Infantry. He was discharged on January 7, 1863 and listed as disabled.
George apparently never married. He was listed as single at the time of his enlistment.
He passed away about 1864. According to a Find A Grave Memorial with no tombstone picture, he is buried at Big White Lick Regular Baptist Cemetery in Pittsboro, Hendricks County, Indiana. A picture of the tombstone has been requested.
