Biography

John was born on June 28, 1838 in Jefferson County, Indiana, the son of Henry Surber and Mary Connor.

On May 18, 1856 he married Susanna Swafford. They moved frequently in their early marriage, following John's father, a Separtist Baptist Minister from congregation to congregation. By 1859 they were in Iowa where they lived in Madison, Cass, and Polk Counties and possibly others before moving to Kansas. They are found in Leavenworth, Kansas in 1870. Susanna died in 1876, presumably in Kansas.

The Surbers had eight known children: Susan, David Martin, William Henry, Edwilda Margaret, Joseph C., Mary Ann, Arminta, and Anabel.

After Susan's death, John married Rachel Brewer on September 22, 1878 in Crawford County, Arkansas. She had previously been married to Nelson K. Tingler and Elam G. Darnell and had children with both marriages. John and Rachel had no known offspring together. They were living in Crawford County, Arkansas in 1880.

John married a third time to Elsie A. (Maiden Name Unknown) Merchant on December 23, 1893 in Scott County, Arkansas.

By 1900 John had moved to Potter County, Texas where his son, William Henry Surber lived with his daughter. They are living next door to him in the 1900 census.

Bible records indicate that John died Oct 5, 1909, possibly in Texas.
