Sir Alexander,lord of Dinsdale and North Gosforth, was born in 1357 in Durham, England, the son of Sir Thomas Surtees and Alice Hilton. He married Margaret, daughter of Sir William de Skipwith of Beakby, and died 20 weeks after the birth of his son Thomas. They were also the parents of a daughter, Alice.
