Daniel Ewald Susee (December 5, 1938 - August 3, 2005) Daniel Ewald Susee was born in Gervais, OR to Ewald and Elva Susee and grew up in Mt. Angel. Dan graduated from Kennedy High in 1956 and lettered in both football and baseball. He served his country from 1960-1963 in the U.S. Army, stationed in Ft. Benning, GA and Munich, Germany. Dan married Virginia Knori of Mt. Angel in 1964, and they were married for 18 years and had four children: Denice Arnold of Woodburn, Lisa Wolfe of Gainesville, TX, and Matt Susee of Woodburn; he was preceded in death by his oldest son John Susee. Dan owned and operated Ideal Interiors Inc. with his brother Dennis for 12 years, establishing a strong reputation for honesty and integrity in the business community. Dan then managed Madera Ventures for several years and moved on to Knez Building Supply of Tigard as a supervisor until his retirement in 2001.
Dan enjoyed hunting, fishing, gun collecting and favored Butte and Abiqua Creeks in his prime, but mostly enjoyed the Cascade Mountains above Scotts Mills; knowing almost every road and cat trail, where it led, and all by memory. He was truly happiest when in the hills; even if just going for a drive.
Dan suffered from Diabetes, Congestive Heart Failure and Kidney Failure, which required dialysis three times per week. Even with amputations, numerous doctor appointments and a difficult diet; Dan never complained or asked, “why me?” he would simply say, “we play the hand we are dealt.” Secure in his faith and a long time member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, he faced his own death without fear or regrets, unaware of the void he would leave behind in the hearts of his friends and family. Dan was surrounded by friends and family before passing away peacefully with his daughter Lisa at his side.
Dan is survived by his siblings: Veryl Key, Mark Susee, Kathy Susee and Robert Susee. Dan was preceded in death by his brother Dennis and parents, Ewald and Elva Susee. Dan also doted on his 8 grandchildren and was looking forward to his future great grandson. His life-long friends (50+ years), Jerry Mack of Hermiston and Roger Mack of Oregon City will miss him greatly.
