Family Tree of James (Sutherland) Dunbar of Hempriggs 1st Bt

Biography

James (Sutherland) Dunbar of Hempriggs 1st Bt is a member of Clan Sutherland.

Sir James Sutherland was born circa 1683 the younger son of Sir James Sutherland, the 2nd Lord Duffus. He died I n 1724. [1]

Through his wife, James inherited her father's estate of Hempriggs in Caithness. His father-in-law's baronetcy was inherited by his wife's uncle and because he owned Northfield in Moray, that family became known as the Dunbar of Northfield Baronets. On James being created a Knight Baronet in his own right, he and his successors became known as the Dunbar Baronets of Hempriggs. His family eventually inherited the peerage held by his elder brother Admiral Kenneth Sutherland when his brother's grandson Captain James Sutherland 5th Lord Duffus eventually died with a large number of offspring, all illegitimate.

Notes

Explanation of the confusion of Baronets of Hempriggs. the Peerage.com was right and anonymous was right as well. According to the Complete Baronetage, by Cokayne, Vol 4, p 390 William Dunbar, of Hempriggs, co. Caithness was created 1st Baronet Dunbar of Hempriggs on 10 April 1700, but when he died he left the estate of Hempriggs to his daughter Elizabeth. His brother who succeeded him in the Baronetcy became 2nd Baronet Dunbar, (but) of Northfield (which was the estate he owned).

Meanwhile (page 442) Elizabeth married as her second husband, Hon. James Sutherland, who changed his name to Dunbar and he was separately created 1st Baronet Dunbar on 10 December 1706 and because they inherited the estate of Hempriggs that line became known as Baronet Dunbar, of Hempriggs.
