Biography

Mary Sutherland is a member of Clan Sutherland.

Mary was the daughter of Horatio Sutherland and Elizabeth Ginman.^{[1] [2]} When she was 18, she lived with her mother at 30 Merchant St. in Poplar, East London. ^[3] Elizabeth died in 1888, and at 26, Mary was a pauper living on and off in the Poplar Union Workhouse. Her occupation is listed as "charwoman." ^[4] Her settlement papers list six addresses where she presumably worked as a domestic worker, with the length of service ranging from five weeks to three years. She stayed with an uncle, Richard Jinman (Ginman), for seven weeks before entering the workhouse on October 6, 1890. Her half brother Walter Ford's name is entered at the bottom of the list of addresses with an address, 8 Fairance (?) Street. ^[5]

In 1901, Mary may have been living with Caroline Saunders (46) at 133 Grove Road in Bethnal Green, London, apparently in a flat. Mary is referred to as Caroline's niece and both women work at home as Fancy Wool Hands^[6] But in 1911, Mary is again working as a general domestic servant and living in a workhouse, this time Mile End Old Town Workhouse.^[7]

A Mary Sutherland, born about 1865, died in Stepney, London, in 1936. This could be her, but needs to be proven.^[8]
