Robert went to live and work in Saint Vincent in the West Indies where he was a Merchant.
In 1810 Robert Sutherland conveyed land at Kingstown and in the Caraib country and 400 named enslaved people on St Vincent to Hon. Simon Fraser and James Henry Houstoun to secure his debt to them. This is inferred to be Waterloo plantation.[1]
He was joint owner of the Waterloo and Orange Hill plantations, and his inheritors (eldest sons of his late brother George Sackville (Sutherland) Sutherland of Rhives (1770-1812) would later claim over £10,000 in compensation in 1836. [2]
