Sutherland-1961 and Sutherland-1812 appear to represent the same person because: These are the same man.
Yes, Caithness can be frustrating - so many similar names and DNA often is equally confusing, at least for me. Such a closed community for a long time, much intermingling of all the families.

However, the other problem is that more data is unlikely, so not sure how we move from "maybe" to "could be" to "probably".

We can say there is an OPR marriage record for Alexander Sutherland and Marion (Mary) MacKenzie in 1797 in Latheron (both in Smerall? likely Smerly/Smerlie) and they very likely had at least one child named Francis b. around 1798. I don't have an OPR record for this birth though.

I have found many DNA matches whose family come from Caithness. Often I cannot find a link, even though we may have well researched trees going back a long way. I have come to the conclusion that due to the many cases of cousin marriage there are DNA segments that are pretty common in the population. This makes it very difficult to use DNA to verify a common ancestor. Many of the matches are too small to be considered reliable.

I'm not convinced due to it being a common name. Please could you document the DNA evidence?

There are two autosomal DNA test takers who trace their lineage through this family. Earle Lowe shares 51.6 cM of DNA with Tricia (More) Barnett on 11 segments, the longest being 9.0 cM. Earle Lowe shares 25.8 cM of DNA with Bryce I. Sutherland, on 7 segments, the longest segment is 4.4 cM. The only certain way to sort the Sutherlands is through DNA matching. I believe this likely match bears a serious look, but I haven't proposed a merge, yet.

I believe Sutherland-7556 and Sutherland-1812 are the same person based on the DNA matches, the dates and the locations. A merge of these two profiles would finally begin drawing the threads together on this family.
