Biography

John Sutherland is a member of Clan Sutherland.

John Sutherland [1]

Born abt 1782 Parish of Berriedale, Latheron, Caithness, Scotland [2]

By the time he died his birth was estimated as around 1786, but 1841 (rounded down ages) & 1851 agree about 1782/3

Census

1841 Knockally, Latheron, Caithness, Scotland

SUTHERLAND: John 55 tailor; Esther 56 ; Alexander 14, All born County [3]

1851 Knockally, Latheron, Caithness, Scotland

SUTHERLAND: John 69 tailor b. Par. of Berriedale, CAI; wife Esther 69 b. Par. of Latheron; Dtr Anne 25 Hemp Spinner b. Par. of Berriedale, CAI [4]

In 1861, in Knockally were John, 76 widower and farmer, Ann Sutherland domestic servant 38 and Ann McGrigor 13 granddaughter.

In 1871, in Knockally, lived John Sutherland retired farmer 84, his daughter Ann Sutherland a domestic servant 50 .

John Sutherland survived Esther and died on 12 March 1874, aged 88, having had a left sided paralysis for 7 years. He had no medical attendant. He is described as a tailor and cottager. He died at Knockally and their son Hugh registered the death.

The death certificate of 12 March 1874 gives his parents as Robert Sutherland crofter and Janet Sutherland née Sutherland and says he was 88 years old,[5] implying a birth date of 1786 or so. Robert and Janet may well be the couple who married on 20 February 1777 in Dunbeath, Latheron [6]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Roland, I've corrected the 1851 census transcription, the copy in my database says wife is Esther not Ann

Roland

It is a typo I think. On Scotland’s People the 1851 census for Knockally has John, Esther wife and Anne daughter. I will email it to you Best wishes Rob

1841 Census, John's wife is recorded as Esther

1851 Census, John's wife is recorded as Ann

Esther died 1855.

My question is: are these two Johns the same person?

Roland, re your census comment below, It is the 1861 census that shows John as a widower in 1851 he is indeed with his not yet late wife

And yes, his age does vary somewhat, although the 1841 census will have been rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5, so could be actually 55-59, which 59 fits with the 1851 aged 69

Sutherland-3453 and Sutherland-880 appear to represent the same person because: see merges proposed for wife Esther and her parents, also note that the informant for Esther's brother Adam's death (1855 Knockally) was his brother-in-law John Sutherland, present; Which date and place "fit" well.

Regarding John Sutherland-3453:

1841 Census, John 55, implies b. 1785/86 1851 Census, John 69, implies b. 1781/82. 1861 Census, John 76, implies b. 1784/85 1871 Census, John 84, implies b. 1786/87 My question is: are these John Sutherlands the same person? From the ages given in the Census they appear to have different birth years.

Regarding John Sutherland’s wife Esther Sutherland: 1841 Census, Esther 56, implies b. 1784/85, which ties in with her profile. 1851 Census, John is recorded as a widower. According to Esther’s profile, she died on 2 Apr 1855.

There are many Sutherland families in that neck of the woods. Some Sutherlands may have married Sutherlands, possibly cousins or second cousins, or unrelated next door neighbour Sutherlands.

Some more investigation may be required.

Sutherland-5083 and Sutherland-3453 appear to represent the same person because: These profiles represent the same man, husband of Esther Sutherland from the Blackness and Golsary family and should be merged.

Mark Sutherland-Fisher: Genealogist of Clan Sutherland

This is possibly John Sutherland husband Esther Sutherland, daughter of William and Ann Sutherland in Golsary. If so William inherited Golsary from his maternal grandfather of the same name.
