Biography

John Sutherland is a member of Clan Sutherland.

Son of Peter Sutherland and Isabella McLea. Married 1) Letitia Ann King Married 2) Angeline (Pentz) Maxwell

John Sutherland (60) is on the 1871 census of Canada with wife Mary A (33) and John's children (several are too old to have been born to Mary); Collin (17), William (23), Margaret (6), Freeman (3) and Frederick W (4 months).[1] There is also a Cate L Pence (23) and a Nancy Maxwell (9) in the household. Cate would be Mary's sister I assume, while Nancy is Mary's daughter from her first marriage. John and Mary were both widower and widow when they married in 1864.[2]

John Sutherland (70) is on the 1881 census with wife Angeline (43) and their children; Maggie (16), Freeman (11), Frederick (10), and Ralph (5).[3] Also in the household are Catherine McDowel (33), John Marshall (16) and James McDonald (66). Catherine would appear to be the same Cate L from the previous census, unsure of others.

John Sutherland died on Sept 14, 1891 and was buried at Lockeport Cemetery in Shelburne County. His wife Angeline lived on until Feb 1, 1916 when she was interred next to him.[4]
