He came to New Brunswick about 1769, settled on the upper southwest Miramichi River in Northumberland County[1], and married Catherine McGregor. Their children included:
George Sutherland b. 1784, d. 1845, m. Hannah Wasson b. - , d. 27 Oct 1868, d/o John Wasson and Hannah Estey: settled on Nashwaak then on the Miramichi, then at Kingsclear in York County: they had at least five children[1][2]
Joseph Sutherland born 1786, d. 1851, married Jerusha Mooers b. - , died 1871, d/o David Mooers and Hannah Smith: they had thirteen children: first settled on Miramichi, then moved to Milo, ME[1][3]
James Sutherland b. 1788, married Abigail Stewart and had nine children: first settled on the Miramichi, then moved to Maine before 1851[1][4]
Elizabeth Sutherland born 1790[1], who married John Wasson, brother of Hannah (see George b 1784 above)[5]
Thomas Francis Sutherland b. 1792, died 1868, m. Prudence Johnston b. 1801 Upper S.W. Miramichi, d/o Charles Johnston and Sarah Lewis: settled in Maine and had children[1][6]
Sarah Sutherland born 1794, married William Johnston in 1816, son of Charles and Sarah (Lewis) Johnston Upper Miramichi, and moved with him to Fort Fairfield Maine
