Francis Sutherland (50) appears on the 1841 Census of Scotland with his wife Mary (45) and their children; Eliza (20), Jane (17), Jessie (15), Frances (14), Henry (10), and Catherine (5). Also present are lodgers David Meikle 35 (At Sea), John Graham 18 (At Sea), Jasper Hodge 21 (At Sea - Ropes and Sails), Andrew Peat 22 (At Sea), William Smith 26 (At Sea), Euphemia Brown 13 (Family Servant), and Charlotte Eusson 14 (Independant). It's unclear if there was any relation between the boarders other than the Sailors.[1]
It is noted in Francis' letters to his brother William that his son "Henry Johnston" Sutherland was named after a Manager at the bank he worked at. This was the Commercial Bank owned by the Mowbrays in Leith.[2]
It appears Henry Johnston Sutherland died at age 21 in Chelsea on Mar 26, 1853. He was living on "Princes Street" at the time.[3]
