Alexander was born in 1829, probably on the family croft at Rogart in Sutherland.

Married Mary Robertson 1856^[1] who died 1874.

Alexander Sutherland died at Melbourne East 1891 age 57, mother Lillie SUTHERLAND, father Andrew^[2].

SUTHERLAND— On the 14th inst., at Melboume, Alexander Sutherland, formerly of Lake Bolac, aged 57 years.

Although the newspaper obituaries state Alexander was aged 57, he was in fact aged 62. It is quite probable that none of his surviving family members knew his actual date of birth and were relying on "stories" he had told them, which was quite common.

Although this profile names him as Alexander John Sutherland, my records show him just being plain "Alexander Sutherland". The middle name "John" may have been acquired in later life. He had an elder brother named "John".
