Joseph, son of Nathaniel and Sarah Sutlif, was baptized in Durham, Connecticut, 27 July 1712.[1][2][3]
Marriages
Joseph married first Sarah _____,[1][4] who was named as mother of his children.[5] The wife of Joseph Sutliff died 10 July 1780, and was buried at the Farmingbury (presently Wolcott) Burying Ground.[6]
He married secondly Katharine Seward, [1][7] who died November 11, 1791,[1][7][6] and was buried at the Farmingbury Burying Grounds.[6]
Waterbury
Joseph Sutliff was made a freeman, in Waterbury, 17 September 1751. (Joseph Jr. was not yet 21.)[8]
A 1760 list of 28 taxable Waterbury inhabitants residing in the "East Branch [afterwards Wolcott] three miles [or more] from the meeting house" included Joseph Sutliff with an estate of eighty-six pounds, and Joseph Sutliff, Jr. with an estate of seven pounds.[8]
In 1789 Joseph Sutliff (not Jr. ) was charged 4s 4p in taxes as a resident of Farmingbury, in Waterbury.[7]
Joseph was enumerated in the 1790 census, living in Waterbury, himself and a female, no doubt his wife. The name looks like Stalief. Joseph 2nd is directly below his listing.[9]
His house was "probably at the foot of Chestnut Hill on the old road going directly up the hill." He was a tailor. One leg was defective and he walked with a cane or crutch.[7]
Note: It was his son, Joseph Sutliff Jr., who was appointed to the committee of fifteen to solicit articles of clothing for the Continental soldiers.[10]
Death & Probate
Joseph Sutliff died 1 October 1795, in Waterbury, Connecticut.[11]
His son Joseph, of Waterbury, was appointed administrator of the estate of Joseph Sutliff, late of Waterbury, deceased, on 6 October 1795. An inventory was exhibited 2 Nov 1795 and distribution of the estate was made in June 1796 to Joseph Sutliff, Nathaniel Sutliff, Sarah Scott wife of Timothy Scott, and Anna wife of Daniel Dean. [12]
The Waterbury Vital records list the death of Joseph Sutliff as 1 Oct 1795. It does not designate a Jr or Sr. 1795/6 probate records in Waterbury[12] clearly indicate that this is the death of Joseph Senior, naming his heirs. 1800/01 probate for Joseph Sutliff of Wolcott named his known children as heirs.[13] Old Joseph Sutliff d. 1795 and was buried in the Farmingbury Burying Grounds.[6]

Research Notes
A Katharine Sutliff, wife of Joseph, was buried,[14] but so far no record has been located to make her the sister of Amos Seward. I checked his probate and her alleged father died in 1732 when Katharine was still single.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:
