According to the book listed above, April 1776 Gad enlisted in the Revolutionary War from Haddam, Connecticut. He served one month under Captain Sears, re-enlisted Jan 1777, serving five months as private under Captain Smith; re-enlisted June 1777, served six months under Captain Collins; re-enlisted February 1778 served one year under Captain Morgan in the quartermaster department. Gad was a Revolutionary pensioner of the United States from October 16, 1823 until his death.
After the war he and some of his brothers and sisters, the others having preceded them, went to New York State. Gad settled in Genesee County, thence to Madison County and finally Newstead, Erie County, New York. He was of powerful physique, sprightly and active; visiting, well into his old age, his off-spring annually in different parts of the country; some of his grandchildren living in Elyria, O., and Buffalo, New York., recall his visits coming to them on horseback, dressed in his Revolutionary uniform.
His wife, Katherine, died of consumption while the British were burning the territory around Buffalo, NY in the War of 1812.

Gad Sutliff examined and approved March 14, 1950 by Wm. T. Carpenter, State Register and approved March 28, 1949 by Frank B. Steele, Register General; the following additional information was gleaned regarding Gads service in the American Revolution:
Gad Sutliff enlisted as a private in April, 1776, and served one month under Capt. Sears; enlisted June 1776 and served 7 months in Captain Buckley's Company; enlisted January 1777 and served 5 months in Captain Smith's Company; enlisted June 1777 and served 6 or 7 months in Captain Collin's Company, Col. Ely's Regiment; all the proceeding on the Connecticut Line. He served these enlistments as private, Corporal and Sergeant to the staff of General Washington and took part in the Battle of Yorktown and died later with an abscess in his side as a result of a wound received in battle. Gad Sutliff was paid in Continental money and after this death the Guardian, Uncle of John Albert Rule, kept the money ($3000 or $4000) so long, that it became worthless.
