Gordon was born on 14 May 1884. He was the son of Frederick Sutton and his wife Emily.[1] He was christened at Holy Trinity Church, Margate on 22 July 1884.[2].
On the 1891 Census Gordon was living with his parents, siblings and 3 servants at Updown House, Drapers, Margate. At the time of the Census there were 2 visitors.
[3]
On the 1911 Census he was a visitor at the Wright-Ingle household; Linkwood, Compton Place Road, Eastbourne. At the time he was aged 26 and a medical student. [4] He was registered as a dentist on 27 September 1911. LDS (Licentiate in Dental Surgery)
He married Olive Ethel Wright-Ingle in the summer of 1912 in Eastbourne and they went on to have 3 daughters.[5]
In 1915 Gordon was living at Wood Lodge, Moss Lane, Pinner, Middlesex.[6]
In 1920 Gordon was living at Orchard Dene, Knotty Green, Beaconsfield. [7]
On the Post Office Directory of London 1921 he was a dental surgeon working in partnership with Ralph Dunstan Chapman LDS at 151 Finchley Road, Hampstead. [8]
On The Dentists Register, 1937 he was still at his practice on Finchley Road. [9]
Gordon died in Mount Stuart Nursing Home, Torquay on 3 November 1940.
A notice in the Thanet Advertiser on 5 November 1940 read;
Death of Mr. G. B. Sutton.-The funeral takes place at Buckfastleigh on Thursday of Mr. Gordon Bower Sutton, of Kilbury House, Buckfastleigh, youngest son of the late Mr. Frederick Sutton, of Upton Lodge, St. Peter's. Mr Sutton, who died on Sunday leaves a widow, formerly Miss Olive Wright-Ingle.
On the 1901 Census, Gordon's name is missing but there is a George A B. There is no record of this George elsewhere, no birth record etc. and Gordon doesn't show elsewhere on the 1901 Census.[11]
Gordon is listed in The Dental Surgeons' Directory of 1925 page 183. His entry reads: SUTTON, Gordon Bower, 151 Finchley Rd., Hampstead, N.W.3 (Tel. 5862 Hampstead) ; & 158, Strand, W.C.2 (Tel. DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Gordon by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Gordon:
it's a little odd to name two boys George in one family. George here is only attested to on the 1901 census, from which his brother Gordon is missing. There are no other references found so far for this younger George. He should have appeared on the 1891 census between Gordon and Elsie.
I wonder if the 1901 census taker misheard or miswrote, and this is actually Gordon.
