Biography
William Sutton was born in North Meols, Lancashire, England.
William Sutton is Notable.
William, son of William and Elizabeth Sutton of Church Town, was christened on 5 Apr 1752 in North Meols, Lancashire.[1] William, described as a "musicioner," married Jane Gregson on 20 Aug 1776.[2] He remarried to Hannah (Blundell) Barton on 17 Oct 1820.[3]
William was originally the landlord of the Black Bull Inn and was known for entertaining guests with his fiddle. In 1792, William built a bathing house and seaside hotel to take advantage of the new trend for sea bathing and recently built canal system. The "Original Hotel," was built "in the southern hawes of nowhere," and became a source of disbelief to the citizens of North Meols, earning William the nickname "the Mad Duke," and the hotel the nickname "Duke's Folly." However, the project was a success, the city of Southport growing up around the hotel. William is recognized as the founder of the city of Southport on a plaque at Duke Street/Lord Street.[4]
William Sutton of Churchtown, aged 88, was buried 29 May 1840.[5]
