Note: There isn't any proof that Thomas' 1st wife was named Joane (Sutton)

Joane was born about 1500 to 1504 in Dedham, Essex, England. She died before 1539/1540. The Sutton surname is unproven, because of the lack of documentation concerning the Sutton surname, her LNAB has been changed to "Unknown." Thomas wrote his will 20 August 1555, it was probated 7 May 1556, Dedham, Essex, England. Burial took place 15 October 1555, Parish Church, Dedham, Essex, England. ^[1]

Joane Sutton of Dedham, Essex, England is NOT the daughter of Edward Sutton and Cicely Willoughby. That Joan Sutton was born in 1490, died 1 August 1539, Chichester District, West Sussex, England.^[2]

Joane was the 1st wife of Thomas Butter (1495-1555) of Dedham, Colchester Borough, Essex, England in 1520, Dedham, Essex, England. They had eight children.

1. William Butter, born about 1521, wrote his will in 1594. He was married twice, 1st to Agnes nee Gurden, 2nd to Marian, the widow of Willes.
2. Daughter, about 1523, deceased before 1555, married Wulman, had two children.
3. John Butter, born about 1525, living in 1579
4. Alice Butter, born about 1527, married to Christopher Percyvall, had at least one child in 1555.
5. Agnes Butter, born about 1529, married to Rolfe [she wasn't the spouse of Henry Sherman, in Thomas' will he identifies all his daughters, he didn't do the same thing with Henry Sherman's spouse.] my daughter Agnes Rolfe only excepted
6. Alice Butter, the younger, born about 1530, unmarried in 1555
7. Sibill Butter, born about 1531, unmarried in 1555
8. Margaret Butter, born about 1532, unmarried in 1555

It is believed that Joane died in 1532 or 1539, husband Thomas married 2nd wife, Marion after 1532 (1539).^{[3] [4]}

Research Notes

There is confusion on the use of Butter vs Butler as the surname. Due to this confusion, the ancestry of Joane "Sutton" and Thomas Butter/Butler is difficult to unravel. According to the The New England Historical and Genealogical Register 166 (October 2012):245-58 (Part 1), "The Earliest Shermans of Dedham, Essex, and Their Wives," "Part I: Henry Sherman the Elder and His Wives," by Michael Johnson Wood, the name was Thomas Butter, descendent of Pierce Butter. Due to transciption errors, Thomas Butter became Butler. This would explain why there is no viable link to the Earl of Ormond, Piers Butler. Thomas Butter of Dedham clothier (born say 1493, died by 15 October 1555).^[5]
