Biography

Thomas was born in 1699. Thomas Sutton to George Sutton and Elenor Ashley.

Thomas Sutton and his father George Sutton are named in his grandfather - Joseph Sutton's will that was written on January 11, 1723, and was probated on March 10, 1723, in Perquimans County, North Carolina. Thomas is specifically named as my grandson. [1]

A reliable source is needed to verify but many family histories suggest that Thomas married Elizabeth Jones the daughter of James Jones and Rebecca Lewis.

Thomas passed away in 1749-1750. [2] Until a reliable source is discovered, the best reference available to establish his date of death is found in family histories. [3]

Research Notes

Additional research is needed to separate the conflated events for Thomas Sutton, the son of George Sutton and Elenor Ashley and Thomas Sutton, the son of Joseph Sutton & Parthenia Durant

Spouse: Judith Hardison was not married to this profiled Thomas Sutton from Perquimans County, NC and the son of George Sutton and Elenor Ashley.

She was married to Thomas Sutton from Bertie County and the son of Joseph Sutton & Parthenia Durant. Thomas Sutton from Bertie County was related to the Luerton family through his first marriage to Elizabeth Luerton. After she died, he married Judith Hardison. Shortly thereafter, Judith signs two Bertie County deeds 'as the wife of Thomas Sutton'. One deed was to John Luerton - his brother-in-law by his first marriage. The second deed was to Issac Gregory, the husband of Mary Jones who was Elizabeth Luerton's half-sister. [4]

  • Thomas Sutton and Wife Judith to John Luerton May 8 1734 - 72 pounds for 640 acres formerly Plowman’s property on Cypress Meadow (Bertie County, NC Deed; Book D, page 70)
  • Thomas Sutton and Wife Judith to Issac Gregory, marriner May 9 1734. 200 acres for love good will & affection”. . Part of a tract”. . which I elapsed from Elizabeth Jones . . .and this same 200 acres I assigned over to Mary Jones 7 Sep 1723 which Mary Jones is now married to the said Issac Gregory . . . . (Bertie County, NC Deed; Book D, page 73)
  • Additionally, John Hardison, was named as the executor of (Bertie County) Thomas Sutton's will. John Hardison was Judith's brother and therefore Thomas Sutton's brother-in-law. [5]

The Thomas Sutton in this profile who is from Perquimans County does not have sources - reliable or circumstantial that indicate a connection with Judith Hardison or her family. Due to this, I have removed her as his spouse.

Date of Death: A solid source for the date of death of Thomas Sutton, the son of George and Elenor Sutton has yet to be established and a will has not been found. This is another area where the two Thomas Sutton's histories have been mingled. Care should be taken to avoid using information found in the will filed at Eden House in Bertie County, North Carolina on March 2, 1750 for this profile. That will was written by Thomas Sutton, son of Joseph and Parthenia Sutton and not Thomas Sutton, son of George and Elenor Sutton. [5]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:

Sutton-2443 and Sutton-3015 do not represent the same person because: It seems they may be father and son rather than the same person, but somewhere along the line there is still some confusion over parentage (and I'm not sure I'm not the culprit who introduced jt--could have gotten sloppy).
