Biography

  • Anne was born in either Disley or Macclesfield, almost certainly in 1579 or 1580 (depending on the exact date of her birth according to the Julian calendar); she was a daughter of Francis SUTTON and Eleanor MOLYNEUX.
  • She was baptized at St. Michael's, Macclesfield, Cheshire on on April 2, 1580 (see https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F71G-5WL and "Mosley Memoranda", p. 10).
  • On December 15, 1613 Anne became the second wife of Rowland MOSLEY at the Collegiate Church of St Mary, St Denys and St George, Manchester, Lancashire, England; under the heading "Weddinges in December 1613" this marriage record reads "15. Rowlande Mosley esquire and Mrs Anne Sutton" (see also "Booker", p. 146; "Mosley Memoranda", p. 10).
  • After Rowland MOSLEY's death in 1616, Anne outlived him by some 45 years; she was a powerful figure in church and religious matters and became one of the great benefactors of the poor in the development and growth of Manchester during the 17th Century.
  • She died at Hough End, Withington, Lancashire, England late in 1661 (according to the Julian calendar).
  • She was buried at St. James' Chapel, Didsbury, Lancashire, on March 5, 1661 (according to the Julian calendar); under the heading "March" in 1661-62 the burial record reads "Mris Anne Mosley of ye Houghend widdow was buryed ye fift of March ... 5" (see also "Booker", p. 74; "Mosley Memoranda", p. 10).
  • Thousands of people, including many of the poor, came out to Didsbury for her funeral; according to Henry Newcome's "Diary" (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Newcome), at her funeral in Didsbury "there was it was thought 4,000 poore. And one child killed in the crowd."
