William James Sutton and James Lewis Sutton are known brothers as passed down thru family lore and as confirmed with DNA. Little is know as fact about the Sutton family, except both brothers hail from North Carolina. After MUCH research and comparison of trees and more significantly DNA, I have made an educated guess and speculate that the father of William James and James Lewis (both have been referred to as James) are the child of William James Sutton (who very little is known about.) He is the son of Benjamin Oxley and Sarah Hardy. Again... I cannot prove this 100%, but I would bet the farm on it... Well... Maybe just the barn... But all evidence and DNA points to this conclusion.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

Hi George, I've also proposed a merge between your James and mine. I tried to just add your existing profile of James as a sibling to my profile of William, but it wouldn't let me. I'm not sure what happened there.

Regards, Karen

Sutton-678 and Sutton-6972 appear to represent the same person because: Hello! Just writing again to propose a merge of James. I tried to link the siblings but it wouldn't let me do it without parents.

Hi George,

I just wanted to make a correction to James. James middle name is Lewis, not Laurence.

The source for that is

  • James Lewis Sutton

in the U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900

Also, to confirm... His son is also named James Lewis Sutton.

He was born about 1824 in North Carolina and died on 9 Aug 1870 in South Carolina.
