Mrs. Webster, with her daughters, Mrs. C. A Hodges and Miss Webster, were alone at the time in the home on Burnap street, the former’s brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Sutton, being absent. Mr. and Mrs. Sutton were, however, on their way home, fortunately in a closed car, and were able to reach there in safety. On the way Mr. Sutton was obliged to slacken speed somewhat on account of a pedestrian who, in an attempt to cross the syeet carrying a small umbrella, was whirled around and about, but through their united efforts succeeded in making his destination. The only damage resulting to Mr. Sutton’s property was the loss of a portion of the ridge pole. Mrs. Webster and Miss Mildred returned to “The Locusts'’ on Friday evening. 27. MRS. JOHN WEBSTER, OF HATLEY Hatley, Feb. 23. — This community was saddened at the news of the death of Mrs. John Webster, of this village, which took place in Broad View Hospital, Newport, Vt., early on Tuesday morning, Feb. 14, 1950, after an illness of a little over a week. Mrs. Webster, who was born in Barnston, was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Sutton. Until a short time ago, Mrs. Webster, who had recently passed her 79th birthday led a very active life, looking after her own home, where she lived by herself, caring for her garden and taking an active interest in all the activities of the community. It was hard to realize that she had nearly reached the fourscore mile stone. In 1892, she was united in marriage with Mr. John Webster, who passed away some years ago. They made their first home on a farm just north of the Old North Church, where they lived for many years. Three children were born to them, one son, who died in infancy, and two daughters. Mabel, Mrs. Clarence Doane. of Newport, Vt., and Mildred, Mrs. Arnold Wheeler, of Ayer’s Cliff. Also surviving are two grandchildren. Wayne Hodges and Beverly (Mrs. Wilson); and six greatgrandchildren, besides a large number of more distant relatives, and many friends. Around 1914. they sold the farm in the Old North Church neighborhood and bought the house in the village formerly belonging to Mrs. Pool, where they have since made their home. Mrs. Webster was an active member of the United Church, a faithful worker in the Women’s Association and for many years a member of the Women’s Institute. She was a good neighbour, who will be missed among a large circle of friends. Prayers were said at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wheeler, and Mr. Wheeler, in Ayer’s Cliff, at 2 o'clock on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 16. The funeral service, under the direction of Mr. Cass, of Rock Island, was conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. A. Edwards, at 2:30 p. m., in the Hatley United Church. The bearers were Messrs. Leon Parker, Charles Whitcomb, Thomas Ride, Kenneth Little, Arthur McClay and Howard Ayer. Two favorite hymns, “Unto The Hills” and “Beautiful Isle Of Somewhere” were sung by the choir. A beautiful solo, “Nearer My Home,” was sung by Mrs. Delbert Vaughan, of Lennoxville. Words of comfort were spoken by the pastor, after which the flower laden casket was borne to its last resting place in the family lot in the adjoining cemetery. Among the large company, who came to pay their last respects to a valued friend, were those from Holland, Vt., Rock Island, Newport Vt., Barnston, Brown’s Hill, Coaticook, Ayer's Cliff, Massawippi, and various other places. Sympathy is extended to the bereaved family. (Sherbrooke Daily Record, Feb. 23, 1950, p. 14)

Philinda married 1, 2 Johnnie Smith Webster on 15 Mar 1892 in Hatley, Stanstead Co., PQ.
