Biography

Holga Emma was born in Norway in 1882, the daughter of Fredrik August Svendsen and Emilie Randine Torkildsen.[1][2] She married Theodore Marinius Christensen 16 Mar 1902 in Oslo.[3] She and Theodore moved to Chicago briefly,[4] but Holga and their children returned to Norway between the birth of their son, Roy Christensen[5] and Holga and the children's appearance with her mother and sisters in the 1910 Census in Kristiania.[6] That census is the last record found of Holga so far.

From an email to Leslie Torkelson from Sylvia Kinley, Holga's granddaughter:

"Holga goes with her three children to Norway to visit her family (mother). How long she had planned to stay I do not know. She had the tickets for the return to Chicago. According to plan she had hired a nanny to go with them.

When the day for their return comes closer, Roy takes ill, a bad infection in one ear. He is hospitalised and does not get well in time for the departure. So the only one that goes over by the S/S United States on that date is the nanny.

Roy gets better and new crossing is planned and booked, when Theodore - this time - asks Holga to postpone the departure, he had fallen off a tram-car and was injured, wanted to be fit again before they came back. Obviously the injuries were not lifethreatening. (Later knowing what happened, we presume this may have been «made up».)

Again weeks pass, when the shocking news come that he asks them to remain in Norway. Theodore and the nanny had fallen for each other and he wanted a divorce.

He later had two daughters with his new wife. He kept in touch with his family in Norway by letters and postcards (I still have a few which he sent to my father). Roy remembered his gran as a very strict woman, but imagine her problems already having an adult daughter living in with her and then having Holga coming over with three young children «occupying» her flat too .

This caused an immense bitterness, and my father - Roy - never forgave him, as long as he lived. I know Theodore came over to Norway to see his family, many years later. I believe my father denied to see him. It is my aunt - Walther’s wife -who told me about that visit."
