Olaf I of Denmark (Danish: Oluf I Hunger) (c. 1050 – 18 August 1095) was king of Denmark from 1086 to 1095, following the death of his brother Canute IV the Holy. He was a son of king Sweyn II Estridsson, and the third of Sweyn's sons to rule. He married Ingegard, the daughter of Harald III of Norway, but did not have any children. Olaf was born around 1050, to king Sweyn II Estridsson and an unknown concubine.[2] During the reign of his elder brother Canute IV, Olaf supposedly served as Duke of Schleswig.[3] In 1085, Olaf was called to a leding campaign against England. Canute was held up and could not join the leding, and as the navy grew weary in waiting for him, Olaf became the spokesperson for its concerns. Canute feared Olaf's support among the magnates, while Olaf had misgivings about Canute's dynastic ambition, and saw Canute's son Charles the Good as a potential rival for power.[4] Canute blamed Olaf for stirring up trouble, and Olaf was put in chains by their brother Eric, the later king Eric I Evergood.[3] Olaf was banished to Flanders, under the supervision of Robert I of Flanders.[2]

King Oluf Hunger 1052 - 1095 King 1086 - 1095 When Knud den Hellige was killed, Oluf was elected king. According to Saxo Oluf stood behind a conspiracy together with the noblemen, who killed Knud den Hellige. Oluf Hunger’s years of governing are marked by famine and poverty, which has given Oluf his byname. The famine was interpreted by the church as punishment for the killing of Knud den Hellige.

Oluf was son of Svend Estridsen, and was married to Ingegerd of Norway. They had the children:

  • Magnus (? - 1090)
  • Svend (? - 1097) married to Tora Torbergsdatter, second time to Ellisif of Russia.
