Biography

Birth and Christening

Esaias was born March 10, 1858,[1] at Nydala Bosagård as the youngest child of[2] Sven Gustavsson and his wife Sara Nylander. He was christened March 14 and his godparents were Per Magnusson and Anna Maria Bernhardsdotter in Bosagård, Lars Nylander (Esaias's uncle on his mother's side) and Anna Katarina Boberg in Karlsdal.[1]

Childhood and a Young Adult

Esaias maternal grandfather Jonas Nylander died in 1862 and his mother two years later. Sven was left with three children where the oldest was 13 and the youngest six. In a neighboring croft called Gransbo, lived Sven's younger brother Johan Peter Gustafsson with his wife Anna Erlandsotter and their two sons Sven Peter (born 1848) and August (born 1850) so it was close to relatives and playmates. [3] Nils Mattsson in Vret Västergård was apointed guardian of the children.[4] In 1874 Esaias eldest sister Anna Greta married Johannes Magnusson and they took over the farming of Nydala. The following year Esaias's father Sven passed away and Esaias went to work as a farmhand for Sven Magnus Bergstedt and his family at Bosagård No 2 until 1877 when he returned to Nydala to live with his sister and her family.[5] Anna Greta died in 1887 and the same year Esaias moved to Karsagård in the village of Odensjö.[6]

Family

March 31, 1887, Esaias bought the estate of 3/32 mantal Karsagård in the village of Odensjö,[7] from his sister Magdalena's father-in-law Sven Magnus Bergstedt.[8] It is said that he was allowed to buy it with the condition to marry one of Bergstedt's daughters. When he did not, the girl was broken hearted and left the parish for good.[9]

Ida and Esaias Svensson

In 1888 Ida Johansdotter from Torarp Östergård moved to Karsagård to live with Esaias. They were married December 28.[10] Their oldest child was born in February the following year.[11] Together they had twelve children.

Most of the sons grew up to become masons, lumberjacks and farmers. They also started a store in their home in the 1920's before the village got its first real store.[12]

Death and Burial

Esaias died May 22, 1930[13] of Intracranial hemorrhage[14] and was buried at Odensjö cemetery.
